SPRINGFIELD - Downtown Springfield hopes to clean up its look just in time for Lincoln’s 200th birthday. That’s why one group wants to raise $30,000 to paint murals in areas like downtown street alleys. One stroke at a time Mike Mayosky is trying to change the look of downtown. For him painting murals is a way of life and an effort he hopes pays off. “I hope it actually makes the city look a little more modern and excepting and not so conservative in the sense they don’t want color,” said Mayosky.
It’s that idea of bighting up downtown that has many business owners excited.
“It’s cheerful. You know flowers always make you feel better,” said business owner Kate Hawkes. Becky Schlouch walks to work down the alley every day and is glad to see the change. “You see a lot of broken bottles liquor bottles, but lately that stuff has been cleared up,” said Schlouch.
Downtown Springfield Inc. says that’s why it plans to raise up to 30-thousand dollars to paint 15 murals. “We’ve got so much blank space it would be nice,” said Hawkes. Raising the money won’t be easy, but Mike says it’s an investment that will help downtown grow. “The murals could last 100 years and it’s modern paint. It would just be a gem of Springfield,” said Mayosky. City leaders say so far none of the artist has come forward to ask them for money. They’d like to work with them, but don’t know if they have the cash available.
One of the nicest set of interior murals painted by Mike has to be the set of alcoves and Greek themed statues painted at Augies Front Burner in downtown Springfield, IL. This long, narrow restaurant has a very sophisticated menu and ambiance to match thanks in a large part to the magnificent murals painted throughout.
